Guyanese American Eagle flight Attendant used false ID to get job in the US

jophan porterAn American Eagle flight attendant was arrested yesterday accused of stealing another man’s identity to fly around the world, Miami-Dade police said.

Jophan Porter, 38, is charged with identity fraud and is currently in Miami-Dade County jail.

US apologizes to a Belizean who was imprisoned by mistake

imprisonedThe Department of Homeland Security has issued a formal apology to a Belize-born, U.S. Army veteran who was imprisoned by Immigration and Customs Enforcement by mistake.

The DHS was forced to say sorry to Rennison Castillo a naturalized United States citizen and U.S. Army veteran, who was imprisoned at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington for more than seven months.

The DHS also agreed to pay him $400,000 and has since revised their operation instructions on how to handle persons who present U.S. citizen claims.

Government agencies asked to cut budgets by 3 percent

cut budgetThe V.I. Office of Management and Budget issued a letter to all department and agency heads recently, advising them that their FY 2011 budget appropriations would be cut by 3 percent and requesting their input on where that money could be found.

Gov. John deJongh Jr. also sent letters to the judiciary, asking that branch to seek all cost-saving measures possible as the territory faces a looming $75.1 million shortfall.

The 3 percent reduction is expected to save the V.I. government between $17 million and $20 million in the present fiscal year, said Office of Management and Budget Director Debra Gottlieb.

"It’s 3 percent against their appropriation," Gottlieb said. "So it means they won’t be getting their full appropriation; they’ll be getting 3 percent less than their original."

Motor vehicle licenses go on sale

The Guyana Revenue AuthorityThe Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) commenced the sale of Motor Vehicle Licences for 2011 on Tuesday and the first two days have gone smoothly.

This year, the main centre for the sale of Licenses, Licence Revenue Office (LRO) is implementing new measures for taxpayers’ comfort and improved efficiency in the delivery of service.

A release from the GRA stated that the forecourt of the LRO has been covered with tents and seating is being provided for Motor Vehicle Owners and persons purchasing or renewing motor vehicle licenses and conducting other business, in an effort to make the facility more taxpayer friendly.
