West Indies team bus stoned after win over Bangladesh

The West Indies team bus was struck by stones thrown by Bangladesh supporters following their side’s humiliating nine-wicket defeat in Mirpur.

The Tigers scored only 58 runs in the Group B encounter before West Indies romped home in 12.2 overs.

The International Cricket Council’s media manager for Bangladesh, Rabeed Imam, confirmed to BBC Sport that stones were thrown.

And Windies’ Chris Gayle commented on the attack on his Twitter account.

Opener Gayle, who passed 8,000 one-day international runs during his innings of 37 not out, tweeted : “Bangladesh stoning our bus!!! Freaking glass Break!!! This is ridiculous!!! Damn!!! W Cup with so many security an this happen!! Big Joke!!! Trust me I’m not keen here!!! … players lay flat!!!”

Imam added: “A couple of stones were thrown on the bus. A couple of window panes were damaged. The bus was coming out of the stadium. No player was injured. They have reached the hotel safely.”

West Indies team manager Richie Richardson said they would raise the issue with the ICC.

A senior police official told the BBC: “When the bus came out angry fans threw stones on the bus of the West Indian cricket team from a distance.

“Security was tight but it has been increased after the incident.

“The fans thought that the bus was carrying the Bangladeshi cricket team.

“They were angry with the Bangladeshi team … No one has been arrested so far.”
